Sickness or Impairment

Serious personal problems or an illness can negatively impact on your studies. However, there are some practical steps you can take to assess your options.

  1. Documents
Ensure you keep all your medical certificates. If you visit a doctor ask for a medical certificate outlining the period of impairment. In the event of a bereavement, keep a copy of the death or funeral notice. In the event of a burglary, accident, threat or violence ask the police officer for a report. Please ensure that you contact KAPS in the event of any traumatic incident. Information can be kept confidential unless it is required by law to communicate it. Counselling staff can maintain your privacy so that other staff need not be aware.
Always keep the original documents. A copy will be kept on your file.
  2. Catching up on missed work
You may be able to catch up on any missed work by asking for learning material and assessments through the teaching staff. However, you should do this as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary delays in completing your course. You may also be able to contact your friends in class for notes or handouts.
  3. Apply for extensions or re-assessments
You can contact the Coordinator in your course who can advise on times for re-assessments or extra tuition. Please refer to the Assessment Policy for details. It is important that you contact KAPS earlier rather than later for any special consideration or extensions.
  4. In the event of a disability such as broken foot or leg in plaster, KAPS can organize for appropriate support for teaching and modifications for assessments.
  5. Deferment or withdrawal
In some significant situations it may be possible to defer or withdraw. Please refer to the Deferment Policy for more information.
